Kevlar is one of those materials that seem to be a mystery to a lot of people, after all it's probably best known to stop bullets. One of its many uses is in biker clothing as protection for when you come of. However this does not make the clothing bullet proof, but adds an extra layer of protection for the body in cases of hard impact. For a proper look at its use in motorcycle clothing head over to this article on kevlar clothes

Biker Symbols – The Maltese Cross
The maltese cross is commonly used in biker circles. It's history though goes far beyond bikers and is used by a variety of different organisations and societies. This is an interesting read for those of us who are interested in such things, so go and check out this article below

Heated Biker Vests
It maybe out of season for those in the northern hemisphere, but in the southern hemisphere it's just coming into winter, which makes it a perfect time for those afflicted with bad weather to look into getting some heated biker clothes. One of the items that can help significantly when riding in the cold is a heated vest. If you're in the market than the article below may help to put you in the right direction.

They Just Don’t Understand Biker Clothes
Here's a funny post about what some people say about biker clothes and how they have no real idea about what they're talking about. I particularly like how some of these ignorant marketers will refer to bikers as manly men. I guess it goes with the territory, but you'd think that they'd at least try to sound like they knew what they were talking about. Oh well, I pity the people who think this is what being a biker is all about.

Biker Jewelry
Words such as bold, decadent and daring can quite easily be used to describe bikers and the biker attitude. So too can these words be used with biker jewelry. Whether you're part of the culture or just like the designs, this form of jewelry can and does create a feeling and deep bonds of emotion with the wearer and sometimes with those who see it. Covering a wide range of designs, from the quintessential skull to sometimes religious images, the range of designs available provide for any belief or image you may have of bikers.

GPS Biker Sunglasses
This is one for the wish list. They aren't designed for bikers, but rather snow skiers, but the tech is there and it should only be a matter of time before we see something for bikers, I hope. Of course there's also the problem that they may be distracting, and I'm sure there'll be some regulations to deal with on that front.

Biker Vests – Fashion Accessory or Protection
I was surprised recently to come across a discussion about biker vests and whether or not they performed any function other than being a fashion accessory, or somewhere to put badges/patches. What a load of rubbish. Just like all leather biker clothes they can and do perform a protective function. Just because they don't cover your arms like regular jackets doesn't mean that they don't protect the parts of the body that they do cover.

Caring For Your Motorbike Leathers
Motorbike leathers can represent a significant purchase. And whether they are used while riding or as part of a fashonable outfit, it is important to do certain maintenance to keep them at there best. Of course, using them while riding will create more wear and tear, it's still important to maintain the leather for whatever the reason they are worn.
When choosing a cleaning solution, make sure that it is made especially for the type of leather you are cleaning. Using a furniture leather cleaner on your biker leathers can cause more damage than it repairs. Motorbike leather tends to be made of a harder leather than the leather used in furniture. The exception to this may be for designer leathers that replicate the looks but not the durability of motorbike leathers. However, even when dealing with the softerleathers in the designer lines, it is still important to use the proper cleaners.
Using conditioners can help in prolonging the life of the leather sigificantly. But as with the cleaner, choose wisely and use brands that are recommended by people you trust, makers can often (and do) make claims that are not lived up to.

Whether you believe every word of what he writes or you think some of it (or all?) is a fictionalisation, you have to admit that Jack Riepe is always entertaining. Who Was The Dimwit Who Told You To Ride Like That????
Riding to work today I noticed, for about the zillionth time, what I can only describe as a person with no concept of what protective clothing means. The only piece of safety equipment he was wearing was a helmet, although I'm not even sure that he had it fastened, I'm pretty sure I saw the straps hanging down and not secured.
Unfortunately I don't have a picture, but he was wearing a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops. But that's not even the worst. As he took off from the lights I watched as he dragged his feet along the ground. If they weren't actually dragging they were pretty darn close. I figured he'd pull them up once he reached a certain speed, but no, all the way till the next red light, about a mile, he was dragging his feet. I'd hate to see what happen if he came across a small stone on the road. I can just see his foot being ripped backwards as the stone jammed under his foot. Add to that the protective qualities (ie. zero) of a pair of flip-flops and I really can't see him walking away, or walking period for quite awhile.

Zero Motorcycles unveils faster-charging, even quieter 2011 motorcycle lineup (video)
I don't get why people think quiet is good on a motorbike. It should at least have some sound to let you know it exists. I can imagine riding one and keep thinking I have to start it all the time because it doesn't sound or feel as though it will do anything.
"To those who are still convinced that loud motorcycles make you more safe: it's best you look away now. The quietest bikes in the business just got even more silent."engadget

Woman Biker Down: 5 June 2010 I-80 Crash Aftermath
This is a good example of why everyone should:
a. ride with people who know what they're doing; and
b. wear the right gear when riding, especially when surrounded by people you don't know and don't know their riding ability
"This was a bike on bike wreck probably caused by a chain reaction when someone made a bad move in pack formation. This was the second crash of the day." Ladies Motorcycle Clothing
You don't see much in the video, but it looks like they were lucky it wasn't worse.

Harley Davidson 2011 Blackline
Maybe...just maybe. Okay, so I've already thought of a couple of customisations I could do to it. Let's see if in a year I went ahead with it, although I haven't seen one in person yet, so that may be the determining factor.

Things You See When You Don't Have a Shotgun
On my way home the other day and I was waiting for the lights to change. Glanced over to my left and there's this guy on his scooter. Nothing out of the ordinary about that, except for the fact that he's sitting there munching away on an apple. So what's wrong with that? I hear you say. Think of your average city traffic during peak hours. Now take a look at the smoke coming from the other cars, trucks, buses etc. Now maybe I'm wrong about this, but I'd bet a lot of the residue and crap coming out of those vehicles is settling nicely on this guys apple. And he's just munching away on it as if nothing is strange about eatting something that is being covered with all that crap from the exhaust pipes around him. Also, don't forget about the crap that gets thrown up onto us from the vehicles around us. An apple may be healthy, but with what I can only imagine covering it, I think the benefits would be largely negated.

Adventure GearLab 12: Wolfman Expedition Dry Duffel
This looks like some good gear, especially at this time of year
"In need of a catch-all bag for a ride-and-camp to eastern Oregon last summer, I picked out the Dry Duffel from Wolfman’s Expedition Dry Line collection. I was impressed by the heft of the bag just lifting it out of the box. Turns our that Wolfman doesn’t mess around with flimsy fabrics for these bags" read more at ridermagazine

Dead Man Riding 5
If you haven't started reading this yet, head on over to Road Grits Cafe and get a dose of some great biker fiction.
"Just about the time Roy had finished cleaning himself up, he heard the VStar fire up outside. He stopped and listened carefully to the idle. "Yup...Hagred has done his magic again." Roy thought to himself as he walked back out to the garage. "
